About
The 'ratha' in the name is Surya's chariot, pulled by seven horses that are read as the seven colours of light or the seven chakras of the body. The signature ritual is the Arunodaya Snan — a bath taken in the four ghatis (about ninety minutes) before sunrise, ideally in a river or canal rather than at home. Because this bath is held to keep illness away, the day is also called Arogya Saptami, the seventh of good health. After bathing, devotees offer Arghya by tipping water from a small kalash with folded hands, standing and facing the rising sun. Charity on this day is rated as meritorious as gifts made during a solar eclipse, which is why fasts, donations and tarpana for ancestors cluster here. At Tirumala, the TTD takes Sri Malayappa Swami out on seven different vahanams across a single day.

Festival Date, Tithi & Muhurat

Hindu festivals are tied to a specific Tithi, not a fixed date — so the day shifts every year and even varies slightly across cities.

The Dharmayana app keeps track of all upcoming festivals on the Hindu calendar and reminds you in advance.

Personalised Astrology Around Festivals

Festivals are also a good time to look at your kundali — many families plan sankalp, donations or new beginnings around them.

Inside the app you can:

  • Generate your personal Vedic kundali
  • Talk to a Jyotisha for guidance around career, relationships or health
  • Run kundali matching before fixing a marriage during the festival season

Frequently Asked Questions

Hindu festivals — like Diwali, Navratri, Mahashivaratri, Holi and Janmashtami — mark sacred moments tied to deities, seasons and lunar/solar cycles. Each festival has its own story, vrat, prarthana and rituals, and is timed using the Panchanga so the date moves slightly every year against the Gregorian calendar.
