The day draws on the Tulsi-upakhyana told in the ninth skanda of the Devi Bhagavata Purana. Vrinda, the chaste wife of the asura Shankhachuda (called Jalandhara in the Shiva Purana), was so virtuous that her husband could not be killed in battle. Vishnu took her husband's form and broke her chastity, letting the gods slay the demon. In return for her devotion he granted that the Tulsi plant would rise from her ashes — and that he would accept no offering placed before him without a Tulsi leaf. That boon is why a sprig is dropped into prasad, charanamrita, and naivedya across Vaishnava households. The same belief carries to the deathbed: water steeped in Tulsi leaves is given to the dying, and twigs are placed on the funeral pyre to help the soul reach Vishnu's abode.
