Ashok Ashtami
Named for the Ashoka tree — 'a-shoka', without sorrow — this Chaitra Shukla Ashtami vrat has devotees swallow eight tender Ashoka buds with a Sanskrit mantra asking the tree to keep them free of grief. In Bhubaneswar it doubles as Lingaraja's Rukuna Rath Yatra.
Puthandu
The Tamil solar new year, timed to Mesha Sankranti — the Sun's entry into Aries — and so falling on the same April day every year, unlike the lunar Ugadi. The morning begins with kanni kaanal: opening one's eyes onto a tray of fruit, gold and a mirror set out the night before.

On Mesha Sankranti, when day and night fall roughly equal — hence the name Maha Vishuva — Odisha hangs a dripping clay pot of water over its tulsi and Shiva lingas to cool them through the coming summer, and drinks bela pana, a spiced bael-fruit cooler.
