Kanakadasa Jayanti marks the birth of the 16th-century Kuruba-shepherd saint who was barred from entering Udupi's Krishna temple because of his caste — and for whom, legend says, the idol turned west and a wall cracked open. That gap, the Kanakana Kindi, is still worshipped today.

When this Chaturthi falls on a Tuesday — the day of Mangal (Mars, called Angaraka) — it becomes Angarki Chaturthi, treated as the most powerful of the year, especially in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.
