Frequently Asked Questions
When is Kamika Ekadashi in 2027?
Kamika Ekadashi 2027 falls on Thursday, 29 July 2027. Ekadashi tithi runs from 07:34 AM, 29 Jul to 05:13 AM, 30 Jul IST, as calculated for Ujjain. Times shift by a few minutes for other cities.
What is Kamika Ekadashi?
The first Ekadashi after Vishnu enters his four-month yogic sleep, Kamika falls in the dark fortnight of Shravana (July–August). Devotees worship Vishnu as four-armed Gadadhara and offer a single Tulasi leaf — said in the vrat katha to please him more than gold or pearls.
Why is Kamika Ekadashi observed?
The vrat katha, attributed to the Brahma-Vaivarta Purana, is a chain of tellings: Brahma told it to Narada, Bhishma repeated it to Narada, and Krishna narrated it to Yudhishthira. The story promises that fasting on Kamika wipes out even Brahma-hatya — the sin of killing a Brahmin — and frees the observer from Yama's judgement. The name Kamika means "desired," and the day is also called Pavitra or Pavitropana Ekadashi, observed to relieve Pitra Dosha (ancestral affliction). Two ritual details stand out. First, Tulasi: a single leaf offered to Vishnu is said to outweigh charity of gold and silver, and merely seeing the Tulasi plant on this day is held to clear sins. Second, devotees light lamps of ghee or sesame oil at Krishna temples through the night.
Which prarthanas are recited on Kamika Ekadashi?
Vishnu Shodasa Nama Stotram, Dwadashakshara Mantra and Vishnu Shanthakaram Mantra are recited on Kamika Ekadashi. You can listen to them with audio on this page.
