Sawan Shivratri
The Chaturdashi night of Sawan, when North India's Shiva devotees cool the Lord who once swallowed the Halahala poison. Devotees pour Ganga water and milk on the Linga — the same offering Kanwariyas carry on foot from Haridwar, Gaumukh and Sultanganj through the monsoon.

About
Sawan's link to Shiva comes from the Samudra Manthan story. When gods and demons churned the ocean, the first thing to surface was Halahala — a poison strong enough to wipe out creation. Shiva drank it to save the worlds, and Parvati pressed his throat so it would not pass further, leaving his neck blue. That is why he is called Nilakantha. The whole month of Sawan is treated as a cooling offering to that burning throat, and Shivratri is its peak night. Devotees pour Gangajal, milk, curd and bel leaves over the Linga. Many walk the Kanwar Yatra — carrying river water on shoulder-poles back to their local Shiva temple. In Purnimanta states (UP, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Rajasthan) this is Sawan Shivratri; in Amanta states (Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka) the same tithi is called Ashadha Shivratri. The Shravana Mahatmya in the Skanda Purana frames the month as Shiva's own teaching to Sanatkumara.
